Alumasc Bio-SolaCell is a load-supported, penetration-free bio-solar mounting system designed to integrate photovoltaic (PV) panels with extensive green roof systems. The system combines solar generation with biodiversity, water management, and long-term roof protection in a single coordinated solution, making it suitable for commercial, education, industrial, and public sector buildings.
The system consists of an aluminium base plate and mounting frame combined with drainage and water-storage boards, allowing solar panels to be installed above the green roof without compromising planting performance. Bio-SolaCell is designed to support PV arrays while maintaining substrate depth, water retention, and airflow beneath the panels to encourage healthy vegetation growth.
Bio-SolaCell is universally compatible with standard PV modules and is available in fixed tilt options of 10°, 15°, and 20°, with suitability for roof pitches between 0° and 5°. Its penetration-free design avoids waterproofing breaches and is engineered in accordance with Eurocode stability requirements, with project-specific calculations available where required.
A key feature of the system is its integrated drainage and water retention layer, providing up to 14 l/m² of water storage to support biodiverse planting and contribute to sustainable drainage strategies. The system also offers high compressive strength (100 kPa) and improved ground clearance beneath panels, supporting both durability and long-term ecological performance.
Manufactured in the UK, Bio-SolaCell uses corrosion-resistant aluminium and recycled components, offering high durability and full recyclability at end of life. Embedded carbon data is available for the drainage board, supporting whole-life carbon assessments and sustainability reporting.
