The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) has released a new position paper urging the UK construction industry to adopt more sustainable roofing technologies — including bio-solar roofs — as part of broader climate adaptation strategies.
According to the report, modern roof systems such as green, blue, solar and bio-solar roofs offer multiple environmental and resilience benefits, from reducing flood risk to enhancing biodiversity and cooling urban heat islands. The NFRC says these technologies should become standard rather than optional as extreme weather events increase.
This push comes as the UK continues to work toward net-zero carbon targets, and sustainable roofs are increasingly seen as a key part of both energy generation and building resilience strategies.

Why NFRC Is Pushing Bio-Solar & Other Sustainable Roofs
Reduces flood risk by managing stormwater runoff
Helps cool urban areas and cut heat stress
Increases biodiversity in cities
Generates renewable energy on site
Supports net-zero carbon ambitions for buildings
