Solar Nature

A green-roof-compatible solar frame designed to sit above sedum trays, using vegetation and drainage as ballast.

Solar Nature systems focus heavily on biodiversity. They sit above pre-grown sedum trays or modular green-roof systems, allowing plants to flourish underneath while supporting solar panels safely above. This creates a vibrant ecological environment that supports bees, butterflies, and pollinators. These systems are often chosen by local councils, schools, and eco-focused businesses where green credentials matter a lot.

Because the system is light and non-invasive, it protects the waterproofing and spreads weight evenly. It also tends to be visually appealing — instead of a roof full of grey concrete blocks, you get a roof full of colour and life, with solar panels appearing to “float” above the vegetation. This makes buildings look premium and sustainable.

The drawbacks are mainly performance-related. These systems require wide spacing, gentle tilt angles, and careful plant management. They don’t produce as much energy per square metre as a traditional ballasted PV array. They also require the roof to support the weight of wet vegetation, which some older roofs can’t handle. And maintenance must include both PV checks and plant care.

Solar Nature is excellent for clients prioritizing eco value, visual appeal, and sustainability, rather than raw solar output.
